When preparing this guide, Champane’s Wine Cellars staff editors found that it is best to round up on a quantity than to be short at the event.
You will also find that due to personal preferences and/or event considerations such as ages of guests, length of event, weather, day of week, season, an indoor or outdoor event and recent trends that some of the recommendations will need to be adjusted (increasing or decreasing quantities). For example;
If most of your guests are between 21 and 25 years old without children, you will find that you will have to increase the quantity of beer, wine and spirits to be purchased or,
If your event is having a specialty drink or collection of themed beverages, you will find an increase in the ingredients for that drink or theme beverage with a probable reduction in other adult beverages.

Hosting and Your Responsibilities When you host any type of event where alcohol is being served, you want your guests to enjoy themselves and once it is over, to get home safely, without endangering themselves or others. Being aware of potential problems and planning can help minimize the risks, keep your event fun and safe, and help you and your guests have a good time. You may be held responsible for what happens to your guests when they are in your home, on your property or at any function, event or party you organize, whether it is an intimate dinner, a wedding, a street party or a company event. In addition, if you decide to provide alcohol as part of the festivities, whether your event is at home or elsewhere, you may be held to a higher responsibility for your guest’s actions. Before the event gets going, it is important to make sure that all of your guests have planned for a safe drive home. Know who the designated drivers will be.Do not serve or allow anyone to serve alcohol to a designated driver. When you entertain, you are responsible for taking steps to protect all of your guests from harm, including those who may be impaired or intoxicated. This means ensuring the location is reasonably safe for all guests, protecting them from risk of injury others may pose, and ensuring that activies taking place at the event do not pose a risk of injury.
Champane’s Wine Cellars offers the following ten suggestions to help you reduce the risk of alcohol-related problems when entertaining and help everyone arrive home safely.
Always provide low-alcohol and alcohol-free beverages, such non-alcoholic
punch, soda pop, bottled water, coffee, hot and iced tea.
Serve snacks with drinks and always have food available throughout the
event to avoid drinking on an empty stomach. High starch foods such as
meats, vegetables, cheese, light dips andbreads are good choice.
Do not plan strenuous activities when you serve alcohol. People are generally
more prone to injury or mishap after drinking.
Serve drinks yourself or better yet designate or hire a bartender, instead of an open bar, guests tend to drink more when they serve themselves. Use a shot glass or jigger for measurement and avoid serving doubles.
Never serve minors or allow someone else to provide a minor with any drinks containing alcohol.
Have a plan to deal with any guest who drinks too much. Know how guests will be going home from your event. Promote the use of designated drivers and keep cash and telephone numbers available for taxis. Never drink and drive or ride with someone who has been drinking.
Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before end of event.Bring out non-alcoholic drinks such as water, coffee, tea or soda pop and serve additional snacks or even better start serving desert at this time
The host should avoid drinking any alcoholic beverage so that he/she can stay on top of and avoid potential problems.
Discourage all drinking of rounds or drinking contests.
Plan-ahead by considering the type of event and who will be attending your event so that it is easy to avoid problems and follow this advice.
